PITCH COUNT RULES
FOR 2008
Pitching Rules - Spring Regular Season ONLY - Majors
The following pitching rules have been approved and will be implemented for the Spring 2008 season.
Maximum Pitch Count by Age group:
11-12 year olds: 85 pitches per day
10 year olds: 75 pitches per day
The managers MUST keep up with it and ID any 10 on the mound to the opposing manager, “pitch counter,” and plate umpire.
Max pitches for 10 year olds - 75 pitches
Any 10 not identified before the first pitch – MUST be removed upon “recognition.”
Majors:
0-20 pitches - no (0) calendar day of rest is required
21- 40 pitches requires 1 calendar day rest
41-60 pitches requires 2 calendar days rest and a game
61-85 pitches requires 3 calendar days rest and a game
Exception to pitch count: If a pitcher reaches 85/75 pitches during a game, he can finish out the current batter before being removed from the game.
Other notable pitching rules:
A player who has been removed as a pitcher in a game is prohibited from playing the position of catcher for the remainder of that day.
*(This does not apply to a catcher going to the position of pitcher).*
Pitchers who deliver 41 or more pitches in a game must also have a game of rest, in addition to the number of days rest prescribed. (see above)
The “automatic” intentional walk was removed. If a pitcher wishes to intentionally walk a batter, he/she must do so by pitching four pitches intentionally outside the strike zone that are not struck at by the batter, and are called “balls” by the umpire. All such pitches will count in determining that pitcher’s pitch count.
Players once removed from the mound may not return as pitchers.
* No player "pulled up" from a lower division as a substitute player may pitch for that team.
